About the show

“The King and I” takes some troubling stances on a variety of social issues. Join Diep Tran, the associate editor of "American Theatre Magazine," for an insightful discussion about this problematic musical. More…

Diep has an embarrassing secret. She is Asian-American and a proud social justice warrior. But she really likes "The King and I." She thinks it's a colonialist fantasy that upholds white supremacy, but the music is fantastic and the waltz makes her swoon every time. In this Online Salon, we will discuss the recent Broadway revival of “The King and I”. Did it move past its Orientalist trappings, or will it forever be a relic of a more racist era? Conflicted feelings are welcome (and preferred)!
