Performing a “strikingly imaginative fusion of traditional Samoan/Maori dance and contemporary styles" (The Boston Globe), New Zealand's Black Grace makes its Joyce debut with a selection of works choreographed by founder and artistic director Neil Ieremia spanning the company’s 24-year history. A US premiere, Kiona and the Little Bird Suite, draws from signature pieces (Pati Pati and Gathering Clouds), utilizing body percussion and incorporating live drumming, singing and chanting. Excerpts from recent full-length works include Crying Men, which explores masculinity from a Pacific perspective, and As Night Falls, set to music by Vivaldi.
