About the Show

Mike Leigh's beloved play returns to the London stage.

Set in 1970’s suburbia, Beverly and her husband Laurence are hosting a drinks party for their neighbours. There is plenty of alcohol, an array of eccentric food, and Demis Roussos on the record player. As prejudices are unmasked and tempers begin to flare, the evening can only end in disaster.

Kellie Shirley ('Eastenders') and Ryan Early ('The Archers') lead in this new production.

Garnett cranks up the characters’ dysfunction into outright, caricatured hostility, shifting the already comically heightened tone towards the cartoonish. For the most part, it’s a choice that works effectively.

Vivienne Garnett’s production gives us a hostess who’s trying too hard and lacks any shred of self-awareness, but Kellie Shirley’s Bev veers ... towards a more naturalistic portrayal, and the play lacks some frisson as a result.
