babirye bukilwa's "...cake" looks at the challenges faced by queer Black femmes as they navigate the difficult dynamics of family, debates around identity and issues around acceptance. babirye bukilwa was a 2020 finalist for the Women’s Prize for Playwriting. "…cake" is a prequel to "blackbird hour" and forms part of a trilogy.

See it if You like Six and Hamilton.

Don't see it if You like finished and polished shows. This is still in the works so still feels a little bit disjointed but a good watch nonetheless.

It is at times funny but often grotesque, bukilwa’s lyrical script telling the story of two Black queer women and their deeply interwoven trauma.

Kassaraté and Banya give chilling performances in this 90-minute two-hander...The play reads like a feature-length poem. It favours quick exchanges over prosaic dialogue. Sometimes, when the characters cannot find the right thing to say, they defer to song.
