Titas Halder's drama traces a family's life before and after the Bhopal disaster.
Set in Bhopal, India, in 1984, Darkling follows a young girl growing up with her father and sister in a city undergoing profound change. As industrial development transforms the landscape around them and a chemical factory looms over their community, the family's aspirations and relationships evolve. The story traces the events leading up to the industrial disaster that devastated Bhopal and permanently altered countless lives.
The play is written by Titas Halder, whose previous work includes Foal at the Finborough Theatre. It is directed by Matthew Xia, known for productions including Tambo & Bones and Pass Over. The creative team also includes composer Niraj Chag, designer Simon Kenny, and movement director Anjali Mehra.
Darkling is a co-production between Bush Theatre and Actors Touring Company. The production runs in the Holloway Theatre at Bush Theatre from September 5 through October 24, 2026, with a press night scheduled for September 15, 2026.
