A drama about Shostakovich composing under the threat of Stalinist repression.
Set during the height of Stalin’s regime, the play follows composer Dmitri Shostakovich as he navigates the dangers of artistic life under authoritarian rule. With state scrutiny hanging over every public success and perceived failure, Shostakovich must carefully balance survival with integrity, crafting music that outwardly conforms while quietly resisting political control. Each composition becomes both artistic expression and coded act of defiance.
Holy Fool examines the relationship between art and power through the figure of Dmitri Shostakovich, exploring how creativity persists under fear, censorship, and surveillance. Blending tension with dark humor, the play reflects on tyranny, resistance, and the compromises demanded of artists living within oppressive systems.
