A Puritan bride’s love unravels into madness when her Royalist fiancé disappears.

Elvira, a Puritan maiden, falls in love with Arturo, a Royalist whose politics place him at odds with her family. Although her father eventually consents to their marriage, their wedding is interrupted when Arturo aids a Royalist prisoner’s escape and abruptly departs. Believing she has been abandoned for another woman, Elvira descends into madness. Accused of treason, Arturo later returns under threat of execution, placing their union in jeopardy once more.
