Based on Charlotte Brontë's novel, the production follows Jane Eyre from her difficult childhood under the care of a cruel aunt through to her arrival as governess at Thornfield Hall, the home of the enigmatic Mr Rochester. As the two are drawn together, an atmosphere of secrecy and intrigue deepens around the house, and when the truth behind Rochester's past is finally revealed, Jane is forced to reconcile her feelings with her sense of self and moral conviction.

The production is directed by Lily Dyble, winner of the 2025 RTST Sir Peter Hall Director Award, and is based on the adaptation by Sally Cookson, Mike Akers, and the original company. A co-production between Rose Theatre, Mercury Theatre Colchester, and Storyhouse Chester, in association with Northern Stage, the show is supported by a grant from the Royal Theatrical Support Trust.
