Set within the walls of HMP Drummond, Lifers explores the lives of long-term prisoners grappling with time, ageing, and the possibility of connection behind bars. Lenny, an older inmate facing physical decline, finds himself the focus of attention from Mark, a young prison officer assigned to his care. What begins as a routine duty grows into a relationship that exposes deep tensions in a system designed for punishment rather than support.

The play is written by Evan Placey, whose previous works include Girls Like That and Consensual, and is directed by Esther Baker, Artistic Director of Synergy Theatre Project. The creative team also features Katy McPhee (designer), Tony Simpson (lighting), Sarah Weltman (sound), and Nadine Rennie (casting). Synergy’s work often bridges professional theatre with real-life experiences from the criminal justice system.

Produced by Synergy Theatre Project at Southwark Playhouse, the play continues the company’s mission to create theatre that draws from and reflects on the realities of incarceration. Performed without an interval, the production invites reflection on ageing, justice, and the often-overlooked lives of those serving life sentences.
