Ruth tells the story of Ruth Ellis, the last woman executed in Britain, who shot and killed her violent upper-class lover in 1950s London. The musical traces her relationships with her father Arthur, her devoted partner Desmond, and David, whose obsession led to her undoing, alongside the mysterious visitor who arrives in her cell as her fate approaches. The production captures the glamour of London’s vice clubs, the thrill of the racetrack, and the grim finality of the condemned cell.
The creative team includes music by John Cameron, Francis Rockliff, and James Reader, with lyrics and book by Caroline Slocock. Direction is by Andy Morahan, known for his work in music video and stage direction, and design by Nicolai Hart-Hansen. The production is brought to the stage by Ruth Theatre Productions in association with Cahoots Theatre Company and produced by Denise Silvey, Caroline Slocock, and Mark Thomas.
