As his execution nears, Admiral Byng reflects on duty, betrayal, and the legacy he’ll leave behind.
Set in the final two days of Admiral John Byng’s life, Christopher Swann’s new play explores the downfall of a man condemned for failing to “do his utmost” in battle. Stripped of his rank and sentenced to death after a failed mission to defend Port Mahon in 1756, Byng (Peter Tate) seeks solace in his closest allies: his servant Hutchens (Chris Barritt), a young recruit (James Shenoi), and his sister Sarah (Corrina McDermott). As time runs out, he is haunted by visions of Voltaire (Merric Boyd), whose writings will shape his legacy long after the executioner’s shot. Two sailors punctuate the drama with ballads of the time, underscoring the unforgiving judgment of history.
Led by BAFTA- and Emmy-winning director Christopher Swann, the production features a distinguished creative team, including set designer Peter Bingemann and video artist Helena Hipólito. Peter Tate, known for his acclaimed performances at The National Theatre and The Almeida, brings depth to the role of Byng, supported by a cast with credits spanning the West End and international stages.
"Swing! Swing! Admiral Byng!" is the final installment in Swann’s "Forgotten Trilogy," following "One Night" and "Up In The Blue." Through dark humor and poignant storytelling, it examines duty, betrayal, and the echoes of history that still resonate today.
