Zambia’s 1964 space program brought to life by Ryan Calais Cameron’s world premiere.
Set in Zambia during 1964, The Afronauts tells the story of a schoolteacher who recruits and trains a group of misfit dreamers to participate in the nation’s burgeoning space program. As global powers compete to reach the moon, this ensemble seeks lift-off, presenting an imaginative reinterpretation of the Zambian Space Program and the ambitions of a nation striving for cosmic achievement.
The play is a world premiere by Sky Arts Award-winning playwright Ryan Calais Cameron (For Black Boys, Retrograde). It is produced in collaboration with Nica Burns and staged at the Royal Court Theatre’s Jerwood Theatre Downstairs as part of the Genesis Next Generation programme, a Genesis Foundation project supporting emerging talent.
