A South African driver confronts grief and race in Athol Fugard’s play, directed by Jimmy Walters.
Set in Cape Flats, South Africa, The Train Driver follows Roelf, a railway worker haunted by the memory of a woman and her baby who stepped in front of his train. Driven by guilt, he searches the shanty towns for answers and finds an unexpected confidant in Simon, a gravedigger. Together, they navigate grief, guilt, and unlikely human connection.
The play was written by renowned South African playwright Athol Fugard, whose work often interrogates the moral legacies of apartheid. This Park Theatre production marks the first UK revival in 16 years and is directed by Jimmy Walters, whose past credits include Mrs Orwell and The Trackers of Oxyrhynchus.
Presented by Proud Haddock and Sarah Lawrie in association with Park Theatre, the 2026 staging continues the venue’s tradition of championing bold, socially engaged theatre.
