A bilingual adaptation of a young Jewish woman disguising herself to study sacred texts.
Set within an Orthodox Jewish community, the story follows a young woman who disguises herself as a man in order to study Jewish religious texts, an opportunity denied to her because of her gender. As she enters a world of religious scholarship and communal life under her assumed identity, her pursuit of learning draws her into complex relationships that test faith, tradition, desire, and selfhood.
This stage adaptation is written and directed by Gary Abrahams, with co-writers Elise Hearst and Galit Klas, adapting the short story by Nobel Prize–winning author Isaac Bashevis Singer.
Originally produced by Kadimah Jewish Cultural Centre & National Library and Kadimah Yiddish Theatre, the production is presented by Wild Yak Productions, with Counterminers CIC as associate producer.
