See it if If you want to learn more about life and how kids treat parents it’s a mix of comedy and serious entertainment

Cliched, Dated, Underwritten

See it if It was nice seeing Danny DeVito on a stage. Tame, unchallenging story. Great for a night out with your grandparents.

Don't see it if Dated 1970's sitcom story. Unwritten dialogue that is underacted by DeVito. Felt like a high-school play that landed a big name.

Dated, Great Acting, Refreshing

See it if Leads elevate the material and give excellent performances. Set (and set change) works well and creates interest

Don't see it if Storyline lacks emotion toward beginning. Limited plot resolution leaves feeling dissatisfied.

The New York Times

“It’s hard to imagine what more one could make of an upbeat play about hoarding. The condition is not funny...In a disposable society, hostile to aging, in which anything or anyone no longer obviously useful belongs in the landfill, he believes in hanging on. His hoarding isn’t a condition, it’s a protest.”

“DeVito is a star for a reason: His vulnerable, hilarious performance is a certifiable gem. If only this treasure weren’t so often lost in the piles that surround it.”

New York Theatre Guide
November 3rd, 2023

“The vintage board game Sorry! wasn't designed to be played alone. Leave it to Emmy winner Danny DeVito, who shines as the aimless widow Sam in ‘I Need That’, to turn the unlikely moment into a theatrical highlight that’s silly, sad, and, no joke, poetic.”

“There’s a certain kind of numbness that sets in when you’re stuck in a theater and you realize that the characters up onstage are going to keep playing the same scene, over and over again, for the rest of the evening.”

The Wall Street Journal
November 2nd, 2023

“Absent high drama, the director, Moritz von Stuelpnagel massages the play’s turning points effectively...Mr. DeVito, a master of sharp jabs of sarcasm...buoys the play with his tangy ripostes, as when he feigns surrender...but in surprising ways Sam’s travails remind us that at least they can keep sadness and emptiness briefly at bay.”

Deadline

“Clutter – physical, emotional – is the subject of Theresa Rebeck’s new Broadway play ‘I Need That’, a comedy-drama that stars Danny DeVito works mightily and with increasing futility to stuff with laughs and meaning.”

“ ‘I Need That’ will prove satisfying for those looking to be entertained by DeVito and his daughter. He brings real joy and laughter, and there’s real value in that.”

The Observer
November 2nd, 2023

“DeVito gets more mileage out of Sam than you’d expect from the page, performing with a loose, raffish panache...Funny pronunciation. Silly faces. Kooky obsessives behaving irrationally. It’s been the stuff of sitcoms for decades and popular for a reason. Still, when you put TV-level product on the Broadway stage, don’t be surprised if the audience talks back.”
