See it if I am a great fan of Danny, since his days in TAXI, great comedy of a man that values junk as treasure. It was a must see for the family.

Don't see it if If you’re not a fan of comedy or a fan of Danny , this play is not for you. Great humor and fun.

See it if You want a play that is so true to life and addresses the way we deal with loss and how we must go on...

Don't see it if You do not have interest in watching a show that slowly reveals the meaning of loss and how we cope.

Refreshing, Relevant, Entertaining, Absorbing

See it if You are a fan of Danny Devito, want to see a new play, want something inspirational and with a happy ending, like funny plays

Don't see it if The subject matter is triggering or hits too close to home, can feel like it drags by the end and won't naturally end

Great writing, Great staging, Great acting, Funny

See it if you love comedies about family struggles, personal failures and triumphs. It's touching and funny and truly heartwarming.

Don't see it if like plays that are more action driven then character studies.

Cliched, Slow, Entertaining, Great acting, Funny

See it if If you'd like to see DeVito put his signature comedic stamp on a family drama about hoarding, aging, and loss.

Don't see it if You expect a laugh-a-minute comedy. Beyond stellar lead performance, script feels thin & less than memorable, w/ an unearned final "twist"

The New York Times
November 2nd, 2023

“It’s hard to imagine what more one could make of an upbeat play about hoarding. The condition is not funny...In a disposable society, hostile to aging, in which anything or anyone no longer obviously useful belongs in the landfill, he believes in hanging on. His hoarding isn’t a condition, it’s a protest.”

“DeVito is a star for a reason: His vulnerable, hilarious performance is a certifiable gem. If only this treasure weren’t so often lost in the piles that surround it.”

“There’s a certain kind of numbness that sets in when you’re stuck in a theater and you realize that the characters up onstage are going to keep playing the same scene, over and over again, for the rest of the evening.”

“ ‘I Need That’ will prove satisfying for those looking to be entertained by DeVito and his daughter. He brings real joy and laughter, and there’s real value in that.”

The Wall Street Journal
November 2nd, 2023

“Absent high drama, the director, Moritz von Stuelpnagel massages the play’s turning points effectively...Mr. DeVito, a master of sharp jabs of sarcasm...buoys the play with his tangy ripostes, as when he feigns surrender...but in surprising ways Sam’s travails remind us that at least they can keep sadness and emptiness briefly at bay.”

The Observer
November 2nd, 2023

“DeVito gets more mileage out of Sam than you’d expect from the page, performing with a loose, raffish panache...Funny pronunciation. Silly faces. Kooky obsessives behaving irrationally. It’s been the stuff of sitcoms for decades and popular for a reason. Still, when you put TV-level product on the Broadway stage, don’t be surprised if the audience talks back.”

“Clutter – physical, emotional – is the subject of Theresa Rebeck’s new Broadway play ‘I Need That’, a comedy-drama that stars Danny DeVito works mightily and with increasing futility to stuff with laughs and meaning.”

The Washington Post
November 2nd, 2023

“The view of hoarding as a serious mental health affliction never gets much acknowledgment in this 100-minute, sitcom-adjacent throwback...Rebeck’s desire, for us to empathize with Sam’s grief, manifested as an embrace of any thing that prompts a memory of his wife, is nice enough. It just seems false to suggest such an unhealthy mental condition as somehow romantic.”
