Two couples face romantic tests in a 1950s Coney Island–inspired comedy.
Mozart’s comic opera follows two young couples whose relationships are put to the test through a series of disguises, deceptions, and shifting affections. As the lovers are drawn into an elaborate wager designed to challenge their fidelity, misunderstandings and emotional reversals complicate their bonds.
Phelim McDermott’s staging relocates the story to a 1950s Coney Island amusement park, using the setting’s rides and attractions to frame the opera’s changing alliances and emotional uncertainty. The production combines physical comedy and period-inspired design with Mozart’s score to explore themes of love, loyalty, and desire.
