Mined for real humor and depth in the matierial, Stunning voices, marvelous acting, Epic design informing the opera 100%, Ingenious projections - content & placement, Obsessively, beautifully imagined

See it if a new interpretation of a classic that gives something like the astonishing affect the original might have had in Mozart's day, appeals.

Don't see it if opera scares you. Read more

Brilliant theater, Great singing, Crowd-pleasing production

See it if you're looking for a whimsical, original and fun version of the Magic Flute that's continuously surprising and rewarding, smart & accessible

Don't see it if you're looking for a more traditional production, or don't like the (minor) directorial & textual liberties taken here. Also, b&w again??

Groundbreaking, Enchanting, Delightful, Clever, Absorbing

See it if you want to see one of the most clever, beautifully sung, inventive productions ever staged at the Met.

Don't see it if you have no interest at all in opera.l

See it if Brazen, funny, and magical. A contemporary production without disregard for it origin. Arias and cast soar.

Romantic, Masterful, Great staging, Enchanting, Absorbing

See it if you love the stage magic of a foley artist, projectionist, live video feed, audience interaction, and aerial feats

Don't see it if modern costumes that don’t make sense are going to take you out of the story

Great staging, Funny, Ambitious, Clever, Enchanting

See it if It's not everyday you watch 18th century content and think "dang, this is so fun and the special effects are 💯."

Don't see it if Sit in the middle (you will not be able to see all of the projector illustration overlays from the box seats).

Refreshing, Hilarious, You'll believe a sometimes-pantsles prince can fly, Great staging, Great music, but it's mozart, innit?

See it if It's funny & beautifully sung. I think that Mozart kid may have a future in the music industry. There's a reason it's on all their playbills.

Don't see it if You want traditional staging; this had shadow puppets, wire work, a floating stage, and chalkboard titles. It was VERY fun, but not standard

For a previous production

"The production visually unifies the disparate scenes of this strange journey; still, the overall effect is theatrical and spirited rather than grim...Everything works out in the end, and the welcoming ethos of the production is pervasive."

For a previous production

“ 'Die Zauberflöte' is ultimately an opera about hope for a better society. And McBurney manages to find a way to ensure that in his retelling of this story, it’s a vastly more inclusive one than the one Mozart intended."
