Gabriela Lena Frank’s first opera brings Frida Kahlo and Diego Rivera’s love story to life in a stunning magical-realist tale. On Día de los Muertos, Frida returns from the underworld to reunite briefly with Diego, reliving their fiery passion and pain before parting once more. With a libretto by Pulitzer Prize winner Nilo Cruz, this visually striking production, inspired by their artwork, features Isabel Leonard and Carlos Álvarez under the baton of Yannick Nézet-Séguin. The Met premiere of Frank’s opera has been praised for its rich, imaginative score and vibrant storytelling.
