Delightful, Clever staging, Great voices, Funny, Absorbing

See it if you love Bdway musicals. Fun for everyone, esply insiders. Clever lyrics, excellent piano, wonderful voices, good choreog = a great escape.

Don't see it if you need to hear every word (some lyrics lost). Or want plot (opening premise is weak). Or don't know any shows (parody riffs on originals). Read more

Very tame, Hard working cast, Some great singing, Some clever moments, Disappointing

See it if You can be satisfied by sheer effort. The cast works very hard and most are quite talented. They cover a large selection of Broadway shows.

Don't see it if You’re expecting it to be funny or fresh. It’s neither. There was no real “parody” here but rather a snide retelling. Read more

"Still finding furiously funny ways to burlesque, spoof, parody, and otherwise make digestible mincemeat of the American musical theatre…'Forbidden Broadway…' ranges on the humor scale from smiles to chuckles to laughs to guffaws. Its humor may be cutting, but why else would it be forbidden?"

CRITICS’ PICK "'Forbidden Broadway' Sticks It to the Great Woke Way: Gerard Alessandrini’s franchise was looking as long in the tooth as the shows it aimed to skewer. A new edition brings it back to hilarious life."

"Armed with new material, a fabulous cast and a fresh coat of greasepaint, his 'Forbidden Broadway the Next Generation' mercilessly and hysterically takes on the sacred cows on the Great and sometimes not so great White Way."

"I think of Gerard Alessandrini as a kind of superhero: In a show business world gone mad, you can always count on 'Forbidden Broadway,' his long-running satirical revue, to rise up, phoenix-like, ready to smack down the poseurs and pretenders who would appropriate the Broadway stage for their own nefarious purposes."

4/5 Stars: "Gerard Alessandrini astutely observes that we're in a musical drought. He couldn't be righter, but a drought couldn't come close to stalling the intrepid Alessandrini from sending up the American musical"

3/5 Stars: "What happens when the spoof is as venerable as the spoofed? The answer is this: Moderate amusement, a few good jokes, a lot of middling ones, and no real reason for existing except that it has always existed"

"A Theasy Best Bet… Allessandrini and the excellent quintet he's currently assembled deliver a showcase with an abundance of affection and little bite lost… Even if you aren't a regular theatregoer, there's a lot to relish here."

"How did we survive this long interval without Alessandrini's insightful satirizing and inspired spoofing...This corner welcomes it back as it again demonstrates that it has what it takes to mock the mediocre even as it also joyously celebrates the parodic life upon the wicked stage."

"Sometimes lethal barbs gift-wrapped with humor by a small ensemble… If 'Forbidden Broadway' is uneven, so is Broadway…The pleasures aren't limited to the clever, savvy lyrics. It is also an entertainment because of the physical mimicry…and cast members' vocal talents."

"As with every edition of this series, having seen as many current or recent shows on the boards as possible makes all of Alessandrini's gags and barbs land with an even greater thud. Would I have laughed so hard on his spot-at 'Woke-lahoma' had I not seen Daniel Fish's revisionist revival? (Nope!)"

"Judy Garland…has been done so often that it might seem another sketch couldn't be fresh, but the song she delivers roasts Renee Zellweger, who plays her in the film Judy. It's one of the highlights of the entire revue."
