Time Out New York

"4/5 Stars! Gardner has an uncanny ear for dialogue. She prizes people over plot as she fleshes out her characters, mining their flaws for punch lines and pathos...Director Knud Adams's humanistic touch ensures that there's rarely a false note. Even the elements that feel too on-the-nose don't undermine the evening's potency."

"It's a tribute to Gardner's keen attention to character detail that 'I'm Revolting' rarely feels schematic...Knud Adams's direction adds an intriguing layer or two to Gardner's play."

The title certainly gives one pause, and the setting, a skin cancer clinic in Manhattan, hardly seems promising. One can be entirely forgiven for slumping in one's seat at the Atlantic, steeling one's nerves for an evening likely to be grotesque, maudlin, or both. But don't count out playwright Gracie Gardner, who spins these distinctly unpromising materials into theatrical gold. I'm Revolting…offers as complete a vision of the human comedy as we have seen in months. It's a remarkable feat, instantly announcing the playwright as an exciting new voice.

"In the end, it is the overall subject matter that gives the play its heft. The individual patients are, in some ways, interchangeable. But the situation they are dealing with is something any of us might face."

There are two truisms in life in addition to the one about death and taxes: it takes all kinds of people to make a world and something will get everyone in the end. The world premiere of Gracie Gardner’s I’m Revolting beautifully proves both points. A sensitive and perceptive play set in the waiting room of a private New York City skin cancer clinic, the plot introduces us to all walks of people and many reactions to medical reports. The ensemble cast includes several veteran actors (Laura Esterman, Glenn Fitzgerald, Peter Gerety and Patrice Johnson Chevannes) and several not so well known faces. Knud Adams’ direction is subtle and unobtrusive allowing life to pass on the Linda Gross stage of the Atlantic Theater Company.

An adequate medical procedural multi-character study that just about sustains its 90-minute length. A tacked-on glum surprise twist ending compounds the pervading flatness.
