An all-women absurdist comedy that reimagines the classic marriage plot.
Set in the 19th century, The Betrothed follows Kitty, whose carefully laid plans to secure a suitable marriage are thrown into disarray when her brother's engagement falls apart. Determined to restore social order and preserve everyone's prospects for a happy ending, Kitty navigates a web of romantic complications, betrayals, and shifting loyalties. Performed by an all-women cast, the play reexamines and queers the conventions of the traditional marriage plot.
The play is written by Scarlett Grace McCarthy and directed by Sarah Connolly, who previously developed and staged an earlier production of The Betrothed at The Tank in 2024. The Off-Broadway production is presented as part of WP Theater's Space Program Residency and is produced by Literally Broke, Natalie Rine, and Dani Turner.
The production features scenic design by Ant Ma and Joanne Chuang, costume design by E Morton, lighting design by Lauren Nychelle, sound design by Sid Diamond, and fight choreography by Jessica Scout Malone.
