A Chekhov classic reset in modern Seoul, following a powerful family facing collapse amid rapid change.
A wealthy family stands at the brink of financial ruin as the world around them rapidly transforms. Once secure in their inherited privilege, corporate heirs struggle to confront mounting debt, social change, and the loss of relevance in a society shaped by new wealth and ambition. As personal relationships fray, the family is forced to confront what must be sacrificed when tradition can no longer be sustained.
This contemporary adaptation of Anton Chekhov’s final play is written and directed by Simon Stone (Yerma, Obie Award), who relocates the story from Russia to present-day Seoul.
The production features a transparent glass house set designed by Saul Kim, with costumes by Mel Page and lighting by James Farncombe. Music and sound design are by Youngkyu Jang, with dramaturgy by Danbi Yi.
