A comic, insightful look at Deaf identity, co-written by James Caverly and Andrew Morrill.
Tim and Jake are Deaf roommates living in a city apartment—but that’s about all they have in common. While one embraces Deaf culture with pride and resistance, the other seeks to navigate the hearing world with different priorities. As they clash over everyday tasks—like taking out the trash—their disagreement grows into a sharply comic, layered exploration of identity, communication, and what it really means to understand someone else’s experience.
The play is co-written by James Caverly (known for Only Murders in the Building) and Andrew Morrill, both of whom bring personal insight and authenticity to the characters and their world. Directed by Nathaniel P. Claridad (Once Upon a Mattress at Transport Group), the production is presented by Out of the Box Theatrics, a company known for inclusive and non-traditional staging.
Trash uses humor and conflict to spotlight generational and ideological differences within the Deaf community, offering a rare dramatic lens into nuanced Deaf perspectives rarely seen on stage. The production integrates Deaf creative voices at every level of development.
