Part of Theater for the New City's 2017 Dream Up Festival: Equal parts musical fantasy and documentary theater, this world premiere show explores the life of street musicians, and stars real-life buskers. More…
It’s the day of the annual auditions at Grand Central Terminal for the MTA’s Musicians Under New York program, and more than 300 applicants are vying for spots. The talented few who are accepted receive prime busking spots without fear of being chased away by security. It’s what every busker wants: a chance to make a living, to build an audience, to be offered gigs, and, above all, to be discovered.
"Though 'Buskers' gives these real artists a platform to display their art, the documentary and musical genres don't marry well onstage. What the audience is left with is a talent show/bio show that doesn't quite come together as a theatrical piece. But even if 'Buskers' doesn't cohere so well, there are plenty of songsters and music to keep you glued to your seat...Despite these flaws, ‘Buskers’ unites voices that you wouldn't normally hear together."
