A community celebration where stories are brought to life through music, dance, and performance.
Inspired by interviews with real undocumented Latin American immigrants, Fandango for Butterflies (and Coyotes) comes to life. On the eve of a NYC-wide ICE raid, a group of immigrants gather. As fear threatens the night, a sense of camaraderie builds. Strangers become friends, friends become family, and the fandango plays on.
4/5 Stars "It's refreshing that 'Fandango' is not solely a sob story...The characters have dreams and desires that go beyond the difficulties they face...The dialogue sometimes slips into exposition or didacticism...'Fandango' teaches its lessons best when it targets our hearts, not our heads."
"'Fandango for Butterflies (and Coyotes)' never quite coalesces as drama, but it takes unerring aim at one's heart. It also stands as a devastating refutation of the current administration's disingenuous presentation of immigrants as criminals and miscreants."
"ICE raids, harrowing border crossing journeys and transferring money home are depicted in the rousing and moving play. It's derived from undocumented Latin American immigrants' stories of why they left their countries and of their lives in the United States."
"They talk of their hardships, and express their fears. But what's freshest is their joy. With a superb cast of performers and musicians, the show is only really thrilling when the seven characters recreate the tradition of son jarocho… and sing the beautiful original songs."
