A dance, theatre, puppet piece inspired by the dignified life and death of a 72-year-old woman named Sonia.
Inspired by real events, Lunch with Sonia is inspired by writer/director Federico Restrepo's aunt who made the decision to end her life after a long, difficult battle with illness. A thoughtful meditation on assisted death and the few factors we can control when it comes to the end of our lives. With this piece, Loco7 Dance Puppet Theatre Company hopes to acknowledge the incredible intimacy and the very personal nature of dying as the final event of living a self-actualized, individual human life.
“'Sonia' lifts a grief-tinged tale to a joyous realm, with Sonia at the center, eager to dance in hot pink Crocs. The piece is inspired by Restrepo’s experience with his own aunt Sonia, and it is understandably a bit longer than it needs to be: a result of the fond wish of the living to resurrect our lost beloveds and linger in their company."
"But what’s most remarkable about the show is something subtle. Sonia is surrounded by friends and family, and possibly home health aides, and it really looks as if they are caring for her...but Restrepo and the five other members of his Loco7 company are also the puppeteers bringing her to life."
