A new play tracing Anne Frank’s diary from discovery to a book that changed the world.
The Diary is a new stage work that explores the extraordinary journey of Anne Frank’s diary—from a forgotten notebook on the floor of an Amsterdam apartment to one of the most widely read books in history. Written by Theater for the New City playwright-in-residence Claude Solnik and directed by Deborah Rupy, the play opens at the moment of the Frank family’s arrest, when Anne’s journal is discovered, briefly dismissed, and left behind.
Through a fluid structure that moves forward in time while weaving in family memories, the story centers on Otto Frank as he reads his daughter’s words and reflects on their shared past. As Anne comes vividly to life in scenes between father and daughter, portrayed by Dutch actress Eva Gozé, the play reveals how her voice survived and how Otto helped guide her writing from private pages into a lasting legacy.
