Alicia Dattner's one-woman show recounts stories of unrequited love, interminable virginity, a list of loony lovers, and a dysfunctional family. More…
Dattner turns her comedic gaze on her own sexuality as she takes us through the history of her sexual development. Once a shy girl obsessed with 'Spin the Bottle' and the possible kisses it offers, she grows up and her life becomes a whirlwind of hook-ups, make-outs, and sexual misadventures as she deals with the gap between her desire for love and intimacy, and her paralyzing fear of commitment.
"Dattner’s act is thoughtful, hilarious, and very brave...But Dattner often forgets that on this particular occasion, she’s working in a theatre instead of a comedy club...Dattner stops just short of allowing herself to be that vulnerable...'The Oy of Sex' has plenty of funny moments to go around. I’m sure it’s a very successful show in a comedy club. But in a theater, it has the potential to be more than just a funny comedy show." Full Review
"Dattner is smart, funny, entertaining, talented and full of energy...The confluence of a great writer with a talented actor can bring out the depth that comes with the desperate actions of an addict wrapped up with self-effacing humor. Dattner’s range remains in the realm of stand-up, and make no mistake she is quite funny...While she is quite adept at choreographing her use of a microphone, it got between her and the audience, limiting her range of emotion." for a previous production "Dattner herself is a delight to watch, and her enthusiasm is intoxicating. She is an extremely animated and high-energy performer and really owns the space available...But even with this larger-than-life energy she still manages to come off as a bit shy and reserved...If you’re searching for raunchy fun with a positive message, 'The Oy of Sex' delivers." See it if You want to fall in love — with Alicia Dattner, or yourself or simply the comedy of life and living. Very funny, edgy & totally honest.
Don't see it if You blush easily; or if honesty disturbs or hilarious but sometimes graphic concepts and language offend ears, sensibilities and orifices.
See it if you want to hear very honest, pretty funny and sometimes embarassing stories about one woman's sexual journey, in a very intimate setting.
Don't see it if you're uncomfortable with eye contact and being addressed directly by the actress. Not laugh out loud funny but some ah-ha moments.
