A dark musical thriller directed by Rupert Goold with music by Duncan Sheik.
Set in the opulent world of 1980s Manhattan, American Psycho follows Patrick Bateman, a young and successful investment banker who seemingly has it all: wealth, status, and charm. Engaged to the beautiful Evelyn Williams and on the cusp of securing the prestigious Fischer account, Bateman's life appears perfect. However, beneath this polished exterior lies a more sinister reality, as those around him begin to mysteriously disappear.
This production marks the return of director Rupert Goold to the Almeida Theatre, revisiting the musical he originally helmed in 2013. Goold's notable credits include Spring Awakening, Ink, and King Charles III. The musical features a book by Roberto Aguirre-Sacasa and music and lyrics by Duncan Sheik, known for his Tony Award-winning work on Spring Awakening.
Based on Bret Easton Ellis's controversial 1991 novel, American Psycho offers a satirical exploration of capitalism and consumerism. The musical adaptation delves into the dark psyche of its protagonist, blending sharp commentary with a haunting score to depict a world where the line between success and savagery is perilously thin.
