In a changing Caribbean, one club holds the secrets of a nation on the brink of freedom.
As colonial Trinidad moves toward political independence, tensions rise inside ALMA, a gentlemen’s club in downtown Port of Spain. Owned by Englishman Mansion, managed by the pragmatic Pearl, and desired by the alluring Ruby, the club becomes the stage for shifting power and fragile alliances. When the impulsive Diamond strikes a risky deal with a corrupt U.S. Marine, he sets off a chain of events that threatens not only ALMA’s future but the lives of everyone within its walls.
Driftwood marks the playwriting debut of Martina Laird, known for her work as both an actor and storyteller. Directed by Justin Audibert, Artistic Director of Chichester Festival Theatre, this richly atmospheric new play unfolds in the 1950s Caribbean, exploring questions of self-determination, family, and belonging against the backdrop of a nation on the brink of change.
