About the Show
A true story of young Irish adults and the personal sacrifices they made opposing the South African apartheid.
At Dunne’s Store, shop assistant Mary Manning refuses to sell a grapefruit, sticking to her union instructions not to handle South African goods, in protest of the country’s apartheid policies. Mary is immediately suspended, but it’s not long before she and nine of her colleagues band together & begin to strike.
'Strike!' tells the true story of a group of extraordinary young people standing up for what they believe in.
"...this dramedy is a little too keen on cuddly salt-of-the-earth working class heroes and not keen enough on examining what such actions meant then and, in an age of more individualised protest, what they mean now."
"With the UK experiencing some of the biggest strikes in more than a decade, the play reflects our current life...Yet this is a view of what tireless and resolute camaraderie can achieve. It urges us, too, to take action."
