Hema is determined to take control of her health and her life. After years of restraint, she joins a type 2 diabetes course and seems set on a new path—until Liaquat, charismatic and unfiltered, turns her plans upside down. As the two form an unexpected friendship that blossoms into a tender romance, they rediscover pleasure, companionship, and the courage to embrace desire later in life.

Written by Karim Khan (Brown Boys Swim, Soho Theatre) and directed by Natasha Kathi-Chandra, Artistic Director of Tara Theatre, Sweetmeats explores connection and second chances through the lens of South Asian elders. The creative team includes Aldo Vázquez (set and costume design), Simeon Miller (lighting design), Mateus Daniel (movement), and Amrit Kaur Lohia (composer).

A Bush Theatre and Tara Theatre co-production, Sweetmeats continues both companies’ commitment to bold, inclusive storytelling and new British writing. Early development was supported by Rifco Theatre Company, further highlighting its roots in contemporary South Asian theatre-making.
