There’s plenty of fun physical comedy, endless jokes (Mr Bold writes them for a living) and – thanks to the hyenas – lots of laughter...It’s all very jolly but the energy eventually lags. Running at two hours, Clary’s script is far too long and a bit shapeless.

Lee Lyford’s sprightly, brightly coloured production has a permanent grin on its face, and not only because hyenas are even happier laughing than they are chewing the furniture as a between-meals snack.

So often with family shows, somebody gets bored as it's too sophisticated or too childish. That is unlikely to happen here: a couple of hours of unalloyed delight, a genuine Christmas cracker.
