Iman Qureshi's comedy about a lesbian choir determined to unite their dwindling community.

It’s 2022, and there are no lesbian bars to be found anywhere. Led by a world-weary conductor, The Ministry of Lesbian Affairs - an all lesbian choir - gossip, flirt and sing their way onto the main stage at Pride. But harmony is more easily dreamt than realised.

Playwright Iman Qureshi is an award-winning writer for stage, screen and radio. Qureshi won the 2018 Papatango New Writing Prize with her breakout play 'The Funeral Director'.

Hannah Hauer-King directs this play created by an all-female creative team. This production is recommended for ages 16+.

The plotting and characterisation are heavy handed and Hannah Hauer-King’s production isn’t exactly subtle, but altogether it’s a charming, funny and inclusive piece of work. Qureshi ['s] ... play delves boldly into issues of transphobia and homophobia but it has a generous, open spirit.

‘The Ministry of Lesbian Affairs’ tackles massive themes, in ways that threaten to unbalance what's fundamentally a feel-good comedy. But it all just about works, thanks to a septet of winning performances and Hannah Hauer-King’s taut direction. It's a warm cosy hug of a show.

Iman Qureshi’s second full-length play is a bright and raucous affair. The first act is appealingly bouncy, but the second is let down by a lack of surprises, its issues writ unfortunately large.

The cast's performances are touching, and their colourful costumes are beautifully on trend. It might not be perfect, but The Ministry of Lesbian Affairs is a breath of fresh air for anyone who identifies with lesbian culture.
