About the Show

Set in 19th-century Japan, this Sondheim musical explores tradition, transformation, and friendship.

It's 1853 in Japan and the kingdom has enjoyed 200 years of isolation and stability. But the arrival of an American expedition determined to open up "the floating island" to trade, shakes things up. Told from the point of view of the Japanese, this collection of stories focuses on two friends who are caught up in the crosshairs of this historical moment.
