Tony-winning Playwright Jez Butterworth and Director Sam Mendes reunite for The Hills of California.
“What is a song? A song is a dream... a place to be. Somewhere you can live. In that place, there are no walls. No boundaries. No locks. No keys. You can go anywhere...” After their acclaimed production of The Ferryman, Tony®-winning playwright Jez Butterworth and Oscar® and Tony-winning director Sam Mendes team up again for The Hills of California.
During the scorching summer of the 1970s, the Webb sisters return to their childhood home in Blackpool, an English seaside town, where their mother Veronica is dying upstairs. Gloria and Ruby have their own families now. Jill never left. And Joan? No one has heard from her in twenty years... but Jill is certain their mother's favorite won't disappoint this time. The shabby Sea View Guest House is filled with bittersweet memories of amusement park rides and unpaid bills. In the 1950s, the girls practiced their singing act there every night, under the care of their fiercely loving single mother. When a record producer offers them a shot at fame and a chance to escape, it comes at a significant cost.
With breathtaking design and beautiful music, The Hills of California is described as "a rich, funny, brilliantly layered drama" (Financial Times).
