Theater In The Now

"As captivating a performer Wilkinson is, 'Bible Study for Heathens' encountered some roadblocks. Finding the true intent of the piece was a bit blurry for Wilkinson and director Rizzolo...'Bible Study for Heathens' was an interesting story to say the least. Yolanda K. Wilkinson has offered an incredibly interesting theatrical presentation. But 'Bible Study for Heathens' suffered from some avoidable strong choices." Full Review

Theatre is Easy

“A funny and politically pointed jab at the sexism, homophobia, and material indulgences of ten major religions...Wilkinson is a masterful storyteller and she weaves hilarious and incisive digs into the account of her personal exploration...What’s more, as you’d likely expect, despite its abundant humor, 'Bible Study for Heathens' has more than a few intense moments...Wilkinson walks among the spectators, making this less a production to observe than an interactive experience.” Full Review

New York Theatre Review

"Occasionally, church and art blend together in new and captivating ways. 'Bible Study for Heathens,' a charming new solo show, does just that...From the moment Wilkinson speaks, she proves herself to be a captivating performer with a fascinating personal history...Director Joey Rizzolo shepherds the delightfully unpredictable staging...Wilkinson is strong enough that she could easily command an entire church congregation without losing the intimacy of her material." Queer Voices

"One woman’s fateful journey through faith that will make even the most undevout sit up, listen and most of all howl with laughter...There were moments in which I probably would have benefited from having a better understanding of some of the religious references, however overall this didn’t take away the enjoyment in what was an engaging evening...'Bible Study' is a challenging and vital piece of contemporary theater...It hits the mark with both relevance and humor."
