Clever, Thought-provoking, Great staging, Great singing, Absorbing

See it if you like to see one of Mozart's less known operas.Fewer hummable arias but very thought provoking plot.Title character has difficult choice.

Don't see it if you like more memorable music and arias of Mozart or you don't like opera. Read more

See it if you enjoy Mozart’s Greek mythology grand opera performed by world class singers and orchestra with some neat staging and a surprise ending

Don't see it if you don’t like opera or prefer your Greek mythology bloody, or want to stick with the more familiar works of Mozart

Banal, Dated

See it if You love early Mozart. The singing was good.

Don't see it if You can’t sit through something boring and outdated. There isn’t much that is grand in this production, either, in terms of sets.

"In 'Idomeneo,' Mozart wrote choral music that is perhaps unequalled in any of his other operas... Seldom has the orchestra sounded more luminous and transparent than it did under Honeck’s baton."

"Overall, the singing was good, but without setting the stage ablaze."

"It was a performance of extremes, the accents that much more weighty, the fortes turned into fortissimos and the pianos into pianissimos....This relentless energy never wavered and at peak climaxes throughout it was impossible not to be overwhelmed by the power of the music."

"Mozart’s beautiful melodies unfolded seamlessly, creating an almost trancelike effect. None of the drama or intensity of the score was lacking, but it was a performance on a particularly intimate scale."
