Comedian Jacqueline Novak’s "Get On Your Knees," the most high-brow show about blow jobs you’ll ever see, returns for an encore presentation. More…
From the show:
Novak spins her material on the femininity of the penis and the stoicism of the vulva into an unexpectedly philosophical show that’s part feminist outcry, part coming-of-age tale of triumph. Ira Glass calls it a “nearly Talmudic dissection of a subject. Really funny and just really like nothing else.”
See it if you want to laugh. JN's funny, smart, fearless. Some feminism, but mostly coming-of-age story. You'll acclimate to the detailed BJ discussn.
Don't see it if open talk of private matters discomfits you. Or you want a plot (this is stand up) or staging. JV paces back-n-forth (her FitBit's happy).
See it if You like stand-up shows, especially about oral sex. It is funny and it flows well.
Don't see it if at the 60 min mark, it starts to drag and get repetitive. Could use tightening or maybe tangents about something else.
See it if You are a heterosexual woman, maybe a gay man, looking for light comedy masquerading as naughty humor. Some good laughs. Nothing too heavy.
Don't see it if You’re looking for smart, sharp comedy with a point. I mean...there are some good ones here but it just seems to go on and on to nowhere.
See it if Very funny & entertaining. Brilliant physical comedy, and insight into sex psychology & language. I'm not a standup fan but this was great.
Don't see it if You don't want to see a standup nightclub act. You don't enjoy sexual comedy, physical comedy, & sex stories.
See it if u want to learn "everything you want to know about oral sex but were afraid to ask" from the POV of a clever, funny, self-effacing comedian.
Don't see it if u'll be embarrassed by a frank & explicit (but decidedly not raunchy) soliloquy on such a lowbrow topic (even from a highbrow monologist).
See it if Novak's wildly funny yet devastating stand-up treatise on oral sex (among other things) Edgy & irreverent w/o being salacious Great timing
Don't see it if Novak's comic delivery is often dense & circular requiring attentiveness & patience Frequent prowling about the stage proves distracting
See it if you like female writers/performers & topics rarely discussed in theater, gritty honest humor with bodily references, irreverant stories
Don't see it if Don't like talk of all kinds of sexual activities from female perspective, foul language, stories that pick on men, stand-up style plays
See it if you enjoy solo shows where deep personal insight is illustrated with amusing anecdotes. Very personable & present performer.
Don't see it if you have difficulty with descriptions of sexuality, nothing salacious. The performer's constantly pacing on the empty stage bothered me
See it if Angry grrrl femme perspective of engaging in the sex practice of what title suggests. Socio-political and frank with method to the madness.
Don't see it if Very blue, nervous, and shrill. More than shock value and more than just out-cruding the crude boys' club. Distracting stepping. Amy-lite.
See it if you’re looking for a fun night out and love to laugh about blowjobs. There’s more to this show, though. It’s well written and imaginative.
Don't see it if you’re a prude.
See it if You're a college student who finds jokes about oral sex, tauboli, and virtually every other banal topic hilarious.
Don't see it if Show more than wears out its welcome at 85 minutes. Becomes endless and monotonous, with many walkouts. Many fell asleep.
See it if you are interested in an entertaining, funny & intellectual discourse on oral sex. Novak is a talented comedienne full of energy & nuance.
Don't see it if you're uncomfortable with sexual themes and language. Novak pulls out all the stops & has both younger & older audiences in hysterics.
See it if You want to have a fun and raunchy night of comedy. You don’t mind your comedy centering around blow jobs.
Don't see it if You don’t like bold humor from a woman. You need all your jokes to land well. Occasionally a little slow.
See it if Dignity forever! One woman’s lifelong venture to communicate to boyfriends through blowjobs.
Don't see it if you never have awkward sex and don’t want to hear about it, or think Cosmo-style tips make an expert.
See it if Often extremely funny, very clever, raunchy, but not offensive and a subject matter not often encountered on stage in such depth.
Don't see it if After a while starts to feel repetitive & loses steam. Would work better if trimmed by about 15 minutes.
See it if Stand up session from a straight millennial white woman dick slapping institutionalized patriarchy thru a coming of age story about blowjobs
Don't see it if Stand up, sex / blow jobs, esp. from female gaze, aren't your thing. Vast majority white millennial female audience intimidates you.
See it if You’re interested in a piece that mixes memoir and stand up like a raunchy Mike Birbiglia.
Don't see it if You’re squeamish about sex talk. You want an active story, it’s a talky show.
See it if you want a (dare I say) feminist take on fellatio that is clever, literary, and inspired. This tight stand-up set may make Novak a star.
Don't see it if you're uncomfortable with frank and hilarious depictions of sexuality; you don't want to think of penises as little ladies.
See it if A fan, or up for a fun, slightly fluffed-up evening actually a discourse on language, sex & women’s empowerment, specifically Ms. Novack’s.
Don't see it if Blow jobs, vulvas or graphic, considered ruminations on the penis & fellatio offend or don’t interest, however entertaining, true & fun.
See it if You want a filthy, classy, hilarious romp through Novak's sexual origin story with nods to Eliot, Nabokov, and Shakespeare.
Don't see it if you don't like standup. This is one comedian on a bare stage with a microphone, speaking in the first person.
See it if have ever been on the receiving or giving end of a blow job and was questioning the experience itself.
Don't see it if you don't believe in giving or receiving blow jobs. This just ain't the show for you!
See it if you like your comedy explicit & intelligent at the same time. Unexpected literary references, expected frank talk about sex. Funny moments.
Don't see it if you don't like stand up comedy. If you don't want to hear about a woman's sexual experiences. Show was too long--it felt repetitive.
See it if want to see a hilarious, raunchy 90-minute one-woman show about fellatio and how it affects relationships between the sexes
Don't see it if you're offended by raunchy language and sexual topics or don't enjoy one-woman comedy
