Conventional, Ambitious, Thought-provoking, Relevant, Clever

See it if You are interested in how we discuss difficult figures from American history with some nuance. You are OK with plays about theater.

Don't see it if You don't understand that a play by a Black author with (some) Black characters can be relevant to everyone. This play is about America. Read more

Indulgent, Excruciating, Disappointing, Cliched, Banal

See it if You are curious to see Suzan-Lori’s latest play

Don't see it if You are expecting a depth of insight, a new take on race and performance, or jokes that don’t feel old. Blown away that this was produced

See it if Just watching the incredible YSD grad Sheria Irving on stage is worth coming to the play.

Don't see it if while there was nothing that I disliked about it, if you're looking for a musical or just a comedy, this isn't for you.

Thought-provoking, Ambitious, Well acted, Too long, Unrealized potential (thus far)

See it if Interested in a show that skewers our country's social & political checkered past and also follows the travails of a small theater company.

Don't see it if Though some scenes work very well, others go on far too long. The comic bits don't always land. Read more
