Mozart’s magical fairy tale is a classic holiday treat for audiences of all ages.

In the Met’s abridged, English-version of this classic tale, a cast of standouts comes together to bring the charming story and enchanting music to life, led by Tenors Ben Bliss and David Portillo as the courageous Tamino and sopranos Joélle Harvey and Sydney Mancasola as the virtuous Pamina. The cast also features baritones Joshua Hopkins and Chris Kenney as the lovable lout Papageno, alongside Aleksandra Olczyk as the fearsome Queen of the Night and bass Soloman Howard as her nemesis, the wise Sarastro.

See it if you love The Magic Flute. This is a extraordinary whimsical new staging using puppets to extend the theatricality of the production.

Don't see it if you feel stressing production elements distracts from the singing even though the singing in this production is spectacular.

See it if you like classic operas, you are introducing kids to opera, you like shorter MET productions.

Don't see it if you like opera in its original language, you want to see something more modern, you get hung up on plot holes.

"The performance boasted a winning cast and glowing playing from the orchestra, led with elegance and insight by Jane Glover. I’ve long been in the minority in finding Taymor’s stylized, puppet-filled staging overly busy — too inventive for its own good. But the audience applauded each scenic touch and stage trick, including some children near me, though there seemed not that many of them in attendance overall."
