About the show

In Christopher Durang's celebrated satire, poor Betty heads to the beach for the summer for some relaxation but instead finds death, destruction, mayhem. More…

Looking for a little rest and time to herself, Betty rents a summer share at the beach. But Betty’s luck turns to delicious lunacy when this sensible Everywoman gets drawn into the chaotic world of some very unsavory housemates – her friend Trudy who talks too much; the lewd, semi-naked Buck, who tries to have sex with everyone; and Keith, a possible serial killer who hides in his room with a mysterious hat box. With sand between her toes, walking a thin line between sanity and survival, poor Betty will leave her summer vacation more terrorized than tan.

Durang's absurdist satire of society obsessed w prurient scandal is unbelievably over the top

See it if makes important pt how public feeds on scandal, inflamed by media; public eerily represented by offstage voices/then wraith-like figures

Don't see it if heavy handed; after rape/castration/decapitation + escalating demands 4 horrific entertainment, you feel: enough already, we get the pt!

I guess this is what one would call a dark comedy - laughs about incest, rape and murder

See it if Good acting. Bits of comic relief. The Greek chorus is a nice touch, until it gets tiring

Don't see it if Not to be seen if you want a care-free evening with light humor. Some of the characterizations are a bit over the top

Dizzying, Quirky, Resonant, Disappointing, Slow

See it if You like the playwright Christopher Durang. If you like edgy satire.

Don't see it if You are easily shocked. There are references to sexual assault and murder. You prefer traditional comedy. Most of the comedy fell flat.

Ambitious, Edgy, Excruciating, Cliched, Heavy-handed

See it if you are a rabid Christopher Durang fan, you like plays that mix realism and off-the-wall absurdity, you are OK w/ (offstage) sexual violence

Don't see it if you prefer plays with characters behaving realistically, you cringe at intimations of sexual violence and murder, dislike overdone satire.

Banal, Disappointing, Insipid, Dated

See it if You like the playwright Christopher Durang.

Don't see it if Dated satire that does not hold up well and that is too long and insipid.

Excruciatingly slow / very disappointing, Funny book destroyed by extremely weak performances, Disturbing & offensive twists & turns, Raunchy / edgy / over-the-top camp

See it if you've done your research on this show &/or enjoy Durang's work. He's not for everyone.

Don't see it if you're going in blind. There's talk of incest & rape followed by backstage rape of an incest-survivor, castrations, murders & decapitations.

Also Though I knew the story & understood it to be satire...... Read more Read less

Quirky, Disappointing, Excruciating

See it if you don't mind constant chattering. The mother and daughter characters never shut up.

Don't see it if you want to keep your wits about you. Unbelievably annoying!

Banal, Excruciating, Cliched, Insipid

See it if Christopher Durang's summer share satire is not all that it seems. Something sinister lurks beneath for the unsuspecting.

Don't see it if Puerile humour with untalented actors. Rape and incest themes are added to the litany of crude and tasteless jokes. Embarrassingly weird.

Inexplicable, screeching ?satire? which falls flat

See it if You are interested in Christopher Durang.

Don't see it if You are sensitive to banter about incest, a mother's dismissal of said incest. Rape of an incest survivor and murder. No intermission.

Ambitious, Intelligent, Disappointing

See it if Durang is always an interesting writer, hence the cast of the show has to believe in the material and throw caution to the wind - not here.

Don't see it if Kimberly Kay is the only actor who rose to the occasion of this satire. Also, the theater was very warm on the last hot night of 2018.
