Horton protects the Whos and an abandoned egg in a Seuss-inspired musical.
The Cat in the Hat tells the story of Horton the Elephant, who discovers a speck of dust containing the Whos, including Jojo, a child sent to military school for thinking too many “thinks.” Horton must protect the Whos from a world of naysayers and dangers while also caring for an abandoned egg left by Mayzie La Bird. His efforts lead to ridicule, danger, kidnapping, and a trial, while Gertrude McFuzz remains devoted to him.
Tony winners Lynn Ahrens (Ragtime, Once on This Island) and Stephen Flaherty (Ragtime, Once on This Island) wrote the book together, with Ahrens also writing the lyrics and Flaherty the music. The musical was co-conceived by Ahrens, Flaherty, and Eric Idle (Monty Python's Spamalot). Megan Doyle directs and choreographs.
Based on the works of Dr. Seuss, the Theatre Young Audiences production is recommended for ages 6 and older and runs 75 minutes without an intermission. It is presented through special arrangement with Music Theatre International and is part of 92NY’s Musical Theater Programming.
