A woman adopts her husband’s identity to survive upheaval in 1930s and wartime Germany.
Set in Germany during the 1930s and the decades that follow, the play traces a woman who assumes her late husband’s identity and maintains it through years marked by political upheaval, conflict, scarcity, and social pressure. Tilda Swinton returns to the role of Ella/Max more than three decades after originating it in the 1988 UK premiere of Man to Man. This revival brings together the original creative team, including director Stephen Unwin and designer Bunny Christie.
