The true story of LGSM as two communities unite, set to an original, genre-spanning score.
The production is set in the summer of 1984, amidst a national miners' strike. The plot follows Mark Ashton, a 24-year-old activist who attempts to mobilize a diverse assembly of gay men and lesbians to support the striking workers. This effort leads to the formation of Lesbians and Gays Support the Miners (LGSM), which soon establishes a relationship with a small pit village located in South Wales.
This fierce, funny, and heartfelt musical tells the remarkable true story of how two communities, both under external threat, decided to join forces. In doing so, they discover significant common ground and unexpected solidarity that transcends their initial differences.
The show reunites director Matthew Warchus and writer Stephen Beresford, who created the original 2014 film of the same name. They are joined by composers Christopher Nightingale, Josh Cohen, and DJ Walde. The inspiring real-life events are set to an original score featuring songs influenced by protest anthems, various genres including pop, rock, and disco, and the Welsh choral tradition.
