About the Show
Juke-box musical follows the sensational career of international recording artist, Gloria Estefan.
"On Your Feet" celebrates the life of Cuban-American singer-songwriter Gloria Estefan, winner of three Grammy Awards. Musical includes many of her chart-topping hits such as ‘1-2-3’, ‘Conga’, and ‘Don’t Want To Lose You Now’.
But incongruously residing at the home of the English National Opera, with the cast bopping and twisting up on stage at a safe remove, it’s toe-curling even before we get to the first-half climax and an attempted mass conga in the stalls.
But the times the show actually ignites with real passion and power is during the rousing upbeat songs...The cast is energetically led by Christie Prades as a fiery Gloria and a tall, handsome George Ioannides as a suitably dreamy Emilio.
...the best moment of the evening is the encore medley of hits, when the show throws off the shackles of traditional narrative and instead lets the whole ensemble cut loose, interact with the band, and invite the audience to join in.
...it's easy to see why On Your Feet! was a solid Broadway and touring hit. It will undoubtedly make a lot of people pretty ecstatic over here too. Resistance is futile, that rhythm really is gonna get you.
Kinky Boots director Jerry Mitchell and book writer Alexander Dinelaris do a very decent job with this bio-musical, charting the Estefans’ lives...But there’s something a bit skewed about the pacing of Dinelaris’ book.
