Actor and impersonator David Carl is being held without bail for performing his Trumpian version of 'King Lear.' Now he's forced to do his 'Lear' as the President watches remotely online. The stakes are high: If Drumpf likes Carl and his show, Carl lives. If not, Carl dies. But how can Carl get through this performance without offending his one audience member?
"'Trump Lear' turns out to be a gem, a brilliant gem with many facets that shine an intensely comic light on Trump. It's a brutally honest x-ray as only a comedy can be, a sardonic, scary, funny take on Donald Trump as seen through the eyes of a victimized playwright/performer who is - shades of '1984!' - kidnapped and imprisoned for making fun of the President!" “Pitted against himself with a slim chance of saving his own life. David Carl must perform his one-man ‘King Lear’ for a tyrant Trump under bright interrogation lights. Trump also breaks for commercials which simply portray him as the richest, smartest man alive. David has captured lightning in a bottle with this brilliant comedy. Ultimately, you don't need to hate Donald Trump to enjoy the show. It's worth more than a few laughs for less than a few bucks.” Full Review
"Although it doesn’t detract from the abundant laughs, if you aren’t up on your 'King Lear,' you may find the plot of Shakespeare’s play, such as it is here, a little hard to follow. Carl’s pace, which is brisk, could stand to be slowed down a little...Michole Biancosino is adept at keeping the energy and craziness up without letting it spin into incomprehensible chaos...This wince-inducing, utterly engaging production is a very limited run." "'Trump Lear' is definitely something that will make you laugh, but if you’re looking for it to take your mind off the state of the Administration, it won’t...It is both an interesting take on a Shakespeare classic and a comical perspective on our current political atmosphere...This isn’t a groundbreaking performance, but it’s one that most will enjoy...If you want to see a show for entertainment’s sake, then consider taking yourself down to Under St Marks to see 'Trump Lear.'" See it if You like excellent solo shows, pointed political commentary, well-drawn satire. In these times, you wonder if it's a vision of the future.
Don't see it if You think Donald Trump is doing a good job.
See it if If you have seen David Carl do Donald Trump or Gary Busey, you will really enjoy the show. He's a master impressionist.
Don't see it if You don't want to see a show that has anything to do with Trump, don't like satire or dislike Shakespeare.
See it if Great script, animated acting by a talented mimic/actor. Poor Mr Carl, having to do 3 Bushs/P45 several times/wk must do damage to his soul
Don't see it if if you voted for P45 (pretender NOT president) #45. Better yet, DO see it if you voted for him & learn the error of your ways.
See it if you like any take off on Shakespeare. One man show. Interesting and unusual. Take off on King Lear. different and unusual. Funny.
Don't see it if don't have a sense of humor, don't like an adaptation, take off on King Lear. makes fun of trump so if you are a fan of trump - don't go.
See it if Less about Shakespeare's Lear than David's reaction to Trump presidency Dense, meta-ironic writing jars psychological portraits of the men
Don't see it if Density of writing & references can confuse & disorient Can ramble & borders on sophomoric at times David captivtes when script doesn't
See it if you went to the woman's march, call or email your congressmen or want to be able to laugh at our current state of affairs.
Don't see it if you think the GOP is doing a great job.
See it if you're ok w/1-note skit. How many times can you say "bigly"? Not much Shakespeare here; some good impressions. Cool premise; tiny theater.
Don't see it if you dislike gross-out humor (food inhaled) or red-herrings (wh happened to sister?) Secret boxes were fun. Trump as "nothing" was insightful
See it if you like anything that makes fun of Trump. You enjoy crass, juvenile humor & won't mind being screamed at for most of an hour.
Don't see it if you'll be bored by a single joke stretched out to an entire show. You expect Carl's usually excellent impersonations; his Trump is overdone.
See it if You're a fan of Carl or Buseys Hamlet. Funny. Great impersonations. Solid performer.
Don't see it if This feels a little recycled. It seems offensive for offense sakes and gets self indulgent. Its more suited for funny or die or snl.
See it if you can tolerate seeing more of the orange one, this time as an insane leader (too on the nose right).
Don't see it if you are triggered every time the orange Julius Ceasar is mentioned.
See it if You want to see a unique, intelligent, very funny, multi-faceted but accessible performance that speaks to current events.
Don't see it if ...you're a Trump supporter. Actually, please DO see it if you are a Trump supporter...if you're grossed out by someone eating ketchup.
See it if you're a fan of Shakespeare, or if you're foe of Trump, or if you enjoy witnessing a hilarious, ace performer pulling out all the stops.
Don't see it if you love Trump or don't enjoy Shakespeare.
