About the show

The Morningside Players presents Brian Friel's adaptation of Ivan Turgenev's masterpiece about a quiet country estate disrupted by the arrival of a seductive tutor. More…

Natalya Petrovna, once wooed and won over by the rich landowner Arkadi Sergeyevich Islayev, has grown frustrated in the marriage. She finds comfort in the love of Mikhail Aleksandrovich Rakitin, a family friend. But when Aleksei Nikolayevich Belyaev, her son's dashing 21-year-old tutor, arrives on the scene, she finds a new object of desire. 'A Month in the County' is a nuanced meditation on the nature of unrequited love.

Ambitious, Entertaining, Great staging, Great acting, Great writing

See it if You want to see a good play done very well with no frills. In the basement of an apartment building you've got to be good, and they were!

Don't see it if You have to have a big production. They do a lot with a little, the set was impressive, but you're in a basement and you know it.

Ambitious, Disappointing, Insipid, Overrated, Slow

See it if You really enjoy Russian introspective theater set in a quirky space with a mixed bag of talent. Funny at times, but not funny enough

Don't see it if Excruciating lulls in interest aren't your thing or a slow burn story where the funny moments are few and often cringe-worthy

Great acting, Truly abysmal sightlines, Extraordinarily good considering the venue

See it if you live uptown, you like Russian literature and you want hard evidence of how much talent abounds in every nook and cranny of this city.

Don't see it if you'll be annoyed by not being able to see much of anything even though it's a tiny venue and you're in the 4th row. One word: risers.

Also This is quite a find, considering it's in my hood and every member of ... Read more Read less

Absorbing, Delightful, Great acting, Funny, Great staging

See it if You want to see a entertaining play in a small venue. You want to see some beautiful costumes. You are or are not interested in classics.

Don't see it if You don't like small venues with very nice staging. You are not interested in classics. You don't want to see a play about unrequited love.

Also I think the performers did an amazing job. I thoroughly enjoyed this p... Read more Read less

I must have seen a different play, Uneven acting, Slow, Well intentioned

See it if You love community theater done in awkward spaces, though a few of the actors were better than the production

Don't see it if You have high standards and like to actually see the performance

Entertaining, Uneven, Lacking diversity, Enjoyable

See it if You are interested in a high-level community-theateresque performance of a fun and interesting show. Some of the acting is quite good.

Don't see it if You expect an out-of-the-box interpretation or a diverse cast based on the location of the theatre. The show was competent but predictable.

Uninspired, Overstuffed

See it if You don't care that you won't care about any of the characters.

Don't see it if With a couple of exceptions, performances pretty weak.I always find it weird when only some actors do accents

Delightful, Entertaining, Great acting, Great writing

See it if You enjoy comedies of manners. Glimpses into mores of other times and places. Russian classics.

Don't see it if You will be annoyed by poor sightlines or uncomfortable chairs.

Great acting, Entertaining, Absorbing

See it if Small, detail-oriented productions are to your liking

Don't see it if You have difficulty with hard chairs, actually want to see the stage, don't mind a big cast on a too small stage

Delightful, Great acting, Great staging, Great writing, Entertaining

See it if you enjoy intimate theater experiences with close-up views of performers who are dealing with intimate affairs in this classic play.

Don't see it if you expect a big production with larger-than-life staging and prefer contemporary plays rather than classic ones like this. See it anyway!

Absorbing, Entertaining, Great writing, Great acting

See it if an excellent production of a minor classic; well acted period piece; a play about love and jealousy

Don't see it if its a small community center; get there early and sit up front, limited visibility in back rows

Delightful, Funny, Excellent direction, Good acting, Well staged

See it if A real find! Surprisingly polished production in a surprising location. Fresh and funny. Excellent direction & some first-rate performances!

Don't see it if If you don't enjoy period pieces like French farces and comedies of manners.

Entertaining, Quirky

See it if you want an exploration of love and marriage with some fun moments of laughter.

Don't see it if you're looking for a fancy production - it's in a basement space (though they use it well).

Delightful, Must see, Great acting, Riveting, Great direction/staging/tech support

See it if U appreciate Russian classic adapted brilliantly into English & a focused presentation done with a small budget but a big sincere heart

Don't see it if U do not care for great Russian classics and story set in 1850's. Prefer modern day topics or big budget productions. This is a must see gem

Also Good things come in small packages. Don't be fooled by simple packagin... Read more Read less

Clever, Romantic, Funny, Entertaining

See it if Like Russian plays , local productions with professional actors.

Don't see it if Want bells and whistles - this is in the community room if an apartment complex. Don't like long plays with romantic goings on

Delightful, Enchanting, Great acting, Masterful

See it if available by June 11. Excellent classic play. Great acting with matching direction, staging & set. Among the best Off-Broadway performances.

Don't see it if not available during the show brief run, hate classic plays, and expect fancy venue.

Also One has to respect the dedication and results of Morningside Players w... Read more Read less

Delightful, Funny, Great acting

See it if Very enjoyable show - great acting and charachters -

Don't see it if tiny theatre so its very uncomfortable and hard to see - get there early to get a seat

Quirky, Slow, Thought-provoking, Dated, Fluffy

See it if you're interested in Russian literature, you are profoundly interested in how loveless marriages and affairs can play out

Don't see it if you need theater to do more showing than telling.

Entertaining, Ambitious, Dated, Fluffy, Slow

See it if You like classic Russian plays. You want a no-brainer eve at the theatre. You don't mind being in a basement with a very low ceiling .

Don't see it if You are not very tall (sightlines are abysmal). Are in the mood for a fast-paced comedy/drama. Are not a fan of classic Russian lit/plays

Also The production was very uneven in the talent dept. Several actors were... Read more Read less

Delightful, Funny, Great acting, Great writing, Entertaining

See it if classic theater, well directed, wonderfully performed in a brilliant basement theater. Fun and a must see.

Don't see it if You mind an amateur-like staging (basement) Really the only thing I can think of and it was not at all an issue.

Dated, Slow, Entertaining, Intelligent, Good staging

See it if You appreciate theatre in an unusual space and a combination of humor and drama.

Don't see it if You don't like old Russian literature.

Also An amazing staging job was done within a small space.

Absorbing, Great acting, Entertaining, Great staging, Quirky

See it if Like to be transformed to a different time period with amazing costumes. If you enjoy formal acting with lots of hysterical drama

Don't see it if You don't like basement theaters with obstructed views and uncortable seats

Enchanting, But long

See it if you like period dramas. Cleverly staged considering the small space

Don't see it if you want a big sets

Absorbing, Delightful, Great acting, Funny, Romantic

See it if You enjoy plays adapted from classic Russian novels, injected with some humor.

Don't see it if You don't like plays staged in community centers (it was difficult to see the actors when they sat down).

Clever, Entertaining, Ambitious, Relevant, Resonant

See it if you enjoy historical plays.

Don't see it if You don't like keeping track of many characters.

Also This production had bad seating. Many in the audience could not see th... Read more Read less
