Entertaining, Great singing

See it if you love The Temptations enough to see a biopic about them. This is excellently sung and the choreography is spot on. A fun night out!

Don't see it if you don’t enjoy jukebox musicals, Motown, or biopic musicals in the style of Jersey Boys.

The Guardian (UK)

"The narrative in Dominique Morisseau’s book, which should bring these men to life, feels so skating, sketchy and divorced from the songbook that the production feels hollowed of an emotional centre. Rarely has a show of its kind felt more like a jukebox musical by numbers."

"Impeccably choreographed, beautifully staged and exquisitely sung, this Motown fable is one jukebox musical that's definitely worth a look"

"There are still too many clichés and not enough of the group’s trademark choreography. At least Matt Smith, the music director, has assembled a first-rate band that gets a chance to emerge from the shadows in the finale. But it’s still not enough to set you dancing in the streets."

“The performance of these songs is utterly electrifying. The cast perfectly match The Temptations’ polished R&B harmonies, and Sergio Trujillo’s choreography is an inspired combination of the group’s authentic original moves, but with a contemporary update.”

"Here's one that is a couple of hours of unalloyed pleasure, and that deserves to be a great big fat popular hit."

"Flawless production value and a great story are all part of what makes this special but let’s be special – there is one reason to see this show in particular and that is the truly exceptional cast... 'Ain’t Too Proud' is a fitting addition to The Temptations’ legacy and everyone involved with this masterpiece really should be proud."

Ain’t Too Proud might not have all the ingredients that musicals like Motown and Jersey Boys do, but it does showcase the music fantastically well. If you want to know more about the life and times of The Temptations, you might need to fill in the gaps for yourself but otherwise, just sit back and enjoy the gorgeous sounds of these Motown classics.

“...this is a production that doesn’t fit its venue, lets its audience down by failing to trust them on the tough stuff and takes the easier staging option too frequently.”
