Night Side Songs explores how individuals across the healthcare spectrum—patients, caregivers, and medical professionals—experience the emotional and interpersonal impact of illness. Structured as a musical song cycle, the work uses first-person perspectives and documentary-style storytelling to create a tapestry of personal narratives. Inspired by Susan Sontag’s phrase, “illness is the night side of life,” it examines the connections formed through vulnerability, treatment, and loss.

The musical features words and music by Daniel Lazour and Patrick Lazour, whose prior work includes We Live in Cairo. Known collectively as The Lazours, the duo is recognized for their socially engaged storytelling and folk-influenced scores. Direction is by Taibi Magar, whose directing credits include Macbeth In Stride and Twilight: Los Angeles, 1992, and who also helmed the original production of We Live in Cairo.

Presented by Lincoln Center Theater through its LCT3 initiative at the Claire Tow Theater, the production begins previews on February 14, 2026, and officially opens March 2, 2026. The engagement is currently announced as an open run, with a closing date yet to be determined. The work premiered in earlier versions at American Repertory Theater and Philadelphia Theatre Company, and was further developed at Lincoln Center’s Under the Radar Festival.
